It seems the time has come when LED TVs are now available at a price within reach of most people. This Samsung UE32D5000 comes in comfortably under the £400 mark at just £329.99 currently. So what do you get for the money?
Top end Samsung TV’s are known for high quality image panels, and this UE32D5000 model shows that price does not mean a compromise in quality. Similarly to its main rival the LG 32LV355T it offers full 1080p resolution, as well as two USB Ports for photos, music and film, plus four HDMI ports for all your Blu Ray, XBox 360 or PS3 needs. Being LED it features a slimline design, and even from the front the thin bezel is reminiscent of TVs costing £1000 just a year ago. Picture quality from its 1080p screen is crisp and clear. HD look great, while standard definition feeds aren’t class leading, but they aren’t bad either. Using the available, but expensive Samsung USB dongle you can hook up the TV wirelessly to share files from your PC. Some will find this useful, but for most just being able to plug in the USB and view your pictures on the big screen is more of a plus point.
So what do you lose for getting a TV with many of the features of a top end LED for a budget price? Well the speakers are fine, but movie fans will want to add a surround sound system or a speaker box. At 2x10w they have enough volume but lack definition to match the superb screen. Also there is no Freeview HD. This is not a problem if you have Virgin Media or Sky but those with just Freeview will have to make do with the Samsung upscaling the feed, unless you buy a dedicated Freview HD box.
Overall it is a stylish, and thanks to the cheap price, affordable way to get a large LED TV with a screen that is worth of the name. The minor points that let the Samsung UE32D5000 down, e.g. no Freeview HD and average sound quality are easily rectified or null and void if you already have Sky/Virgin or a speaker system.
